quiet colors

相棒が職場の上司からもらってきた、ある言葉があります。
上司の人の知り合いのお葬式で、奥様からこの言葉が紹介されたそうです。
内容からキリスト教を信仰している人なのかと思いましたが、インターネットで検索してみると、アメリカの病院の壁に書かれていた言葉だそうです。
原文と訳の両方をのせておきます。

A CREED FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey...

I asked for health, that I might do greater things
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things...

I asked for riches, that I might be happy
I was given poverty, that I might be wise...

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God...

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things...

I got nothing that I asked for -- but everything I had hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am among all men, most richly blessed!

大きなことを成し遂げるために
力を与えてほしいと神に求めたのに
謙遜を学ぶようにと、弱さを授かった

偉大なことができるように健康を求めたのに
よりよきことをするようにと、病気をたまわった

幸せになろうと、富を求めたのに
賢明であるようにと、貧困を授かった

世の人々の賞賛を得ようとして、成功を求めたのに
得意にならないようにと、失敗を授かった

人生を楽しもうと、たくさんのものを求めたのに
むしろ人生を味わうようにと、シンプルな生活を与えられた

求めたものはひとつとして、与えられなかったが
願いはすべて聞き届けられた

私は最も豊かに祝福されたのだ
